European Commission develops guidelines on the responsible use of generative AI
The recommendations are based on the principles of research integrity, address opportunities and challenges and provide guidance.
A set of guidelines to support the research community in the responsible use of generative Artificial Intelligence has been presented by the European Commission together with Member States and other stakeholders that are part of the European Research Area.
Artificial intelligence helps transform research, streamline scientific work and accelerate scientific discovery. However, researchers must be wary of the limitations that come with this new technology, such as plagiarism and the handling of sensitive information.
The recommendations are based on the principles of research integrity, address key opportunities and challenges, and provide guidance for researchers, organisations and research funders to harmonise the approach across Europe. The guidance builds on existing principles such as the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity or the guidelines on trustworthy AI.
The guidelines presented include:
- Researchers will refrain from using generative AI tools in sensitive activities and will use these tools with respect for privacy, confidentiality and intellectual property.
- Research organisations will facilitate the use of generative AI and monitor its use in their organisation.
- Funding organisations will promote transparent use of generative AI.
